Thessaloniki. Macedonia. Greece. View of the Hagia Sofia, the church of Holy wisdom, erected in the 8th century on the foundations of an earlier Christian building. Resembling the Agia Sofia in Constantinople (Istanbul) the domed church is remarkable for its huge dimensions and harmonious blend of the Greek cross plan and a three-nave basilica plan. The church was used as a mosque from 1585 to 1912. It is one of several Paleochristian and Byzantine Monuments in Thessaloniki included as a Unesco World Heritage Site. Cosmopolitan Thessaloniki was founded in 315BC in the heart of Macedonia and is the 2nd largest city in Greece.
